SONG OF UMBYR
They wanted a soldier. They got a symphony.
Orphaned since age eight, Ayla has only known the unforgiving walls and silence within the military academy of Deridoss Garrison. Now, she’s an eighteen-year-old expendable conscript, who knows she may not survive her only chance at freedom—the caves below the garrison. It’s where the empire forges magical soldiers, with few survivors. But when Ayla rises from the cave with the help of a mysterious voice, she’s convinced he’s her father’s deathbed promise of protection. The voice pledges to tame her new-found power, so long as she tells no one of him.
Now Ayla will train with the Umbyr-bled—her country’s magical military elite—as she is charmed by their notorious leader, General Eton. He believes Ayla can revolutionize the way they work magic, and limit both the pain and madness associated, but only if she will betray her shadowy tutor.
As the threat to the realm crescendos and Ayla unlocks the reaches of her power, she will make a dangerous discovery that threatens those she loves and the future of the nation. Her father’s songs can only keep the madness of the caves at bay for so long, and the tempo is quickening.
